J. K. Rowling's Crime Novel Rejected at First: Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

The UK Telegraph reports, "Publishers have been left red-faced after discovering that they rejected the latest novel by J. K. Rowling, one of the world’s best-selling writers." Apparently, the Harry Potter author has written a crime novel under the penname Robert Galbraith, but despite her book, The Cuckoo's Calling, receiving good reviews while Rowling remained in anonymous, the novel hasn't

Doctors Used to Give Women Orgasms in the Office? (Video)

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy In the video above, MSNBC's Professor Melissa Harris-Perry talks about how female sexual desire has been treated throughout history in our male-dominated culture. Pointing to a New York Times Magazine article "Unexcited" about Lybrido, a new pill awaiting FDA approval that's supposed to "stoke sexual desire in women,"

Dear Tyler Perry: Zora Neale Hurston vs. Richard Wright is Better Example For You Than Zora vs. Langston Hughes (Video)

In a recent interview with his close friend Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry compared Langston Hughes's negative criticism of Zora Neale Hurston's work to Spike Lee's negative criticism of Perry's work.  I think Perry could use a better example when it comes to contemporary black writers downing his movies, plays, and television shows. (The timing of Perry's interview with Oprah coincides with the

Jersey Grit Propels Steven Hart's Novel, We All Fall Down

If you’re in the mood for a well-crafted, gritty page-turner focused on crime and punishment in a New Jersey township, then Steven Hart’s We All Fall Down is the novel for you. Hart has written not only a compelling story but also shaped his heroine, Karen McCarthy, into a believable woman. Karen McCarthy is the only female cop on a police force determined to make misogyny its battle cry, but

Judy Smith: The Real Olivia Pope Inspiring ABC's Scandal

I love Scandal, Shonda Rhime's hot, new drama on ABC, but I had no idea that it is based on a real black woman, Washington DC fixer (crisis manager) Judy Smith. In the video below, Smith says, "To be a crisis manager you have to be very calm." When clients come to her, they are already in the middle of a crisis and nervous. It would not help for her to be nervous and jumpy as well. She also says

Slavery by Another Name Comes to PBS in 2012

In 2012, a documentary based on Douglas A. Blackmon's Pulitzer-Prize-winning book, Slavery By Another Name, will premier on PBS. The book documents the systematic re-enslavement of many African-Americans in prisons in the American South from the Civil War to World War II. Blackmon, a white journalist, calls this form of slavery "neoslavery" and says that slavery technically did not end until 1942

What's With Negative Critiques of The Help, Movie and Book?

I have read multiple posts and essays that express thoughts on The Help that are similar to mine, critiques of both the novel by Kathryn Stockett and the new movie from Dreamworks based on the book. The deeper objections have little to do with whether Stockett is a good writer or her use of dialect for the black maids in the novel. Here is a list of some of the articles/essays I've read that

Leslie Esdaile Banks, Vampire Huntress Author, Has Died

I am saddened to report that author Leslie Esdaile Banks has passed away. You may recognize her under the name L. A. Banks. I learned of this news through Tananarive Due's Facebook page, but I have confirmed it through other sources. Ms. Banks wrote the The Vampire Huntress Legend series, and I first discussed her fiction in a piece called "The Indisputably Black Vampires of Jewelle Gomez, L.A.

J. K. Rowling's Book Map is Cool

I just finished listening a Writer's Digest on-demand workshop with Cheryl Klein of the Arthur A. Levine imprint at Scholastic Books. She shared a great deal of wisdom, and I was happy to hear her say that while writers are told "show don't tell," the truth is you need both. The workshop was on plot structure, and she's also a believer in the book map. Klein was also the continuity editor for the

Decoding High School: Why Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth

I saw this segment yesterday on CNN with Alexandra Robbins, author of the new book Why Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth. I used to say regularly to children who complained about not fitting in at school, "Geeks rule the world," and sometimes I'd end up in a debate about the difference between geeks and nerds. If you check Amazon, you'll discover a lot of books have the word "geeks" in the title, but

The Controversial Frank Yerby: He Stopped Writing About the Race Problem (Video)

I lived in Augusta, Georgia, for nearly a decade and did not know that Frank Yerby, a famous African-American author, was from there. And I was also a fan of swashbuckler movies as a child, but I had no idea a black man, Yerby, wrote the book upon which the movie The Saracen Blade was based. From the New Georgia Encylopedia, Frank Yerby (1916-1991):Frank Yerby rose to fame as a writer of popular

It's Malcolm Gladwell, Spaghetti Sauce, and Worms in Horseradish for Thinking People

I got this in email yesterday, video at TED of Malcolm Gladwell in his talk, filmed at TED2004, in which he explains what every business can learn from spaghetti sauce. Gladwell is a staff writer for The New Yorker, and best-selling author of the books The Tipping Point, Blink, and Outliers. LearnOutLoud.com has this accurate description of Gladwell's talk:... he explores how the food industry

John McWhorter: Sanitizing Huck Finn Insults Black People

On Twitter, someone asked me had I seen CNN's Parker/Spitzer show tonight. I had not, but since I was told about it I kept my eye out, and wowsers! What a great conversation. From leaving the 18th amendment out of the reading of the Constitution to sanitizing Huckleberry Finn, the panelists were deep.Thank you to Nubia Qua on Twitter. If she hadn't told me, I might have missed it. Yesterday I

Removing "N" Word from Huckleberry Finn is More Southern Revisionism Gone Wild Not Political Correctness

Related: Linguist John McWhorter: Sanitizing Huckleberry Finn Insults Black PeopleI just read about the exceptional foolishness of a misguided southern publisher. At CNN, a Mark Twain biographer, Ron Powers, calls NewSouth Books' decision to strip the word "nigger" from Mark Twain's classic Huckleberry Finn, "vapid, smiley-faced effrontery ... (that) corrodes the foundations of respect for

Notes on Audience and Criticism, No. 1

I'm using my blog now partly as a commonplace book. Last night I came across this article or series of articles at the New York Times about why criticism matters. Since the one I read discusses in part how the Internet has changed views of audience in fiction and writing, I decided to bookmark it. Stephen Burns writes:While (Alfred) Kazin could complain in 1960 that “the audience doesn’t know

Neil Gaiman for the New Year

I'm currently reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman, a book that I've been saying I will settle down and read for at least five years now. He entertains with provocative turns of phrase and vivid description as well as compelling character development. His sense of humor is worth a study all by itself. I know I'll do a lot of thinking as I read it and after I finish it.It's 2011, which will be the
